ABS Overhaul for BMW Motorcycles
Two Proven Solutions for Failure-Prone ABS Systems in Older BMW Models
/// Clear Solutions for ABS Failures
/// Long-term Reliable Braking System
/// Professional Implementation & Registration
Problem Description and Solutions
In various BMW motorcycle models, failures of ABS systems are increasingly occurring with increasing vehicle age. Integral ABS systems from the early 2000s are particularly affected, but later generations can also develop malfunctions over time. The causes are age-related wear, design weaknesses, and influences such as moisture, brake fluid, and electrical stress.
In practice, these problems often manifest as warning messages, restricted or deactivated ABS function, or a switch to a pure residual braking function. For affected vehicles, two technically different solutions are available, which we implement depending on the condition and customer requirements.
ABS System Overhaul
Our video clearly and concisely explains the most common problems with BMW motorcycle ABS systems and how we resolve them.
Solution 1: ABS System Overhaul
For the overhaul, the existing ABS hydraulic unit is removed and sent for specialized repair. The goal is to fix existing defects and replace wear-prone components. Typical weak points include pressure sensors, seals, electric motors, hydraulic pumps, and electronic components, which can be damaged over the years by aging or moisture.
After a successful overhaul, the ABS system is reinstalled in the motorcycle and put into operation. This solution preserves the original system architecture and can be useful if the ABS is fundamentally to be retained and an overhaul is technically feasible.
Solution 2: Installation of an RH Electronic Second-Life Kit
Alternatively, the original ABS system can be replaced by a so-called Second-Life Kit. This kit was specially developed for affected BMW models and completely replaces the ABS hydraulic unit. The system is converted to a conventional hydraulic braking system without ABS, whereby all signals necessary for vehicle operation continue to be processed correctly.
A significant advantage of this solution is that the conversion can be technically documented and registered in the vehicle documents. This preserves the motorcycle’s operating license. The Second-Life Kit is designed as a custom-fit solution and is available in different versions for analog ABS systems as well as for vehicles with CAN bus architecture.
After the conversion, the braking system functions as a classic hydraulic system with a clearly defined pressure point and without the known age-related weaknesses of the original ABS unit. Thus, the Second-Life Kit represents a permanent, structured, and legally sound alternative to overhauling the original ABS system.
Comparing the Solutions
Both solutions pursue different technical approaches. Which variant makes sense depends on the condition of the existing ABS system, the motorcycle model, and personal requirements. We provide transparent advice on both options and professionally implement the technically appropriate solution for you.
Criterion | Overhaul of the Original ABS System | Second-Life Kit |
|---|---|---|
| Basic Principle | Repair of the existing ABS hydraulic unit | Replacement of the ABS system with a conventional hydraulic braking system |
| ABS Function | ABS remains | ABS is removed |
| Typical Motivation | Desire to retain the standard ABS system | Desire for technical simplification and a permanent solution |
| Technical Effort | Removal, shipping, overhaul, reinstallation | Removal of the ABS unit, installation of the kit |
| Age-related Risks | Other components may fail again later | Age-related ABS problems are completely eliminated |
| Residual Braking Function in Case of Defects | System-dependent | Classic hydraulic braking function without electronic intervention |
| Brake Pressure Point | Standard characteristics | Clearly defined, direct pressure point |
| Approval | Standard condition remains unchanged | Conversion is registrable, operating license remains valid |
| Long-term Maintainability | Limited by existing system complexity | High, due to simple hydraulic design |
| Repair Duration | At least 21 days | 1–2 days |

What Our Customers Say
"The bike now runs perfectly and pulls well even in the lower RPM range. I also really like the customizations of the display and other functions. The service was, as always, top-notch and competent, whether it was remote programming or on-site. If it wasn't so far away, you would be my workshop of choice. I will remain a loyal customer and will gladly recommend you without hesitation."
"I am extremely satisfied with this motorcycle workshop. The staff are very competent, helpful, and exceptionally customer-oriented. Even the longer journey from Cologne is definitely worth it. Special thanks to the employee who took over the reception despite his lunch break – a service that is anything but self-evident and shows the high value placed on customer satisfaction."
"I had my R1150 GS in this workshop for the first time for adjustment. First contact was great! Friendly, competent, and likeable. The workshop is very clean and organized. The appointment was kept, and I received a loaner bike. An additional task, like changing the brake fluid, was also done without an extra appointment. After picking up and testing the bike, a big THANK YOU to the team. The motorcycle runs like a charm. It won't be my last visit."
"A huge compliment to the Emotion Ride team. The name truly has meaning here. As soon as you enter the workshop, two things stand out: 1. Everything seems very well thought out and tidy, even though real work is being done here, and 2. You are welcome here. I was impressed from the very first moment and continue to be every time. In summary: friendly, competent, fast, modern, and good VALUE! Your motorcycle is in good hands here."
"Young company, young boss, very competent, friendly, and fast! Had my 21-year-old Kawasaki in for inspection and tire change!!
I will recommend the workshop and will definitely come back if needed!!
Thank you!"
"An honest, modern, and conscientious mechanic!! Highly recommended! Had TÜV (MOT), wheel change, oil change, and crash repair done, absolutely on time. I am very satisfied and will definitely become a regular customer here. It's difficult nowadays to find a workshop that doesn't charge three times the normal price. Thanks Sebastian, I'll be back ;))"
"I had my bike in for inspection at Emotion Ride! Friendly welcome. Professional demeanor of the staff! Mr. Schemuth... a factual and professionally competent contact person! I felt very comfortable from the start! Simply great! Thank you very much!!!!"
