Vehicle Information
On this page, you’ll find the most important information to clearly identify your BMW motorcycle: vehicle identification number (VIN), type code, and engine control unit (ECU).
This information is crucial for correctly determining the compatibility of our products, software solutions, and accessories. At the same time, it allows us to provide a technical assessment if there are any special features on your vehicle.
Vehicle identification number and type code:
You can find your BMW motorcycle’s vehicle identification number (VIN) in field E of the registration certificate part 1 or directly on the frame. It consists of 17 characters and typically starts with “WB1…” for BMW motorcycles.
The type code is crucial for selecting the right products. You can also find it in the vehicle registration document – marked in red in the following example.
The type code is a BMW-specific model identifier and enables your vehicle to be clearly identified. The type code is made up of characters 4-8 of the chassis number (see image below).
For each of our products, you’ll find the required model and type code information in the shop. Simply compare this type code with the value marked in the vehicle registration document. This ensures that products, software solutions, and accessories fit your BMW motorcycle perfectly.
Engine control unit (ECU) information:
For many of our software solutions and tuning measures, the exact type of engine control unit is crucial. The ECU type is printed on the sticker directly on the engine control unit.
Below you can see examples of common BMW engine control units. Compare the designation on your control unit with the stickers shown to clearly determine the correct ECU type.
Engine control unit type:
BMS-X.
Engine control unit type:
BMS-O.
Engine control unit type:
BMS-MP.
If you don’t want to determine the ECU type yourself, simply send us your vehicle identification number (VIN). Based on this, we can clearly identify the installed engine control unit type and tell you which products or software solutions are suitable for your motorcycle.
